Mary Collins
Councilwoman
Mary Collins said it’s hard to improve something that is “so lovely” and she feels what the Graham family began here in Miami Lakes 40 years ago deserves only the most thoughtful effort. We need to immortalize the legacy of the Graham family and make it an even lovelier in years to come.
Collins’ goals for the fiscal year include having a permanent fire station built somewhere near the Palmetto Frontage Road, in the industrial area in west Miami Lakes. Collins said the project should include a sub-station for the Town’s police department.
The facility could service businesses, Barbara Goleman High School, and the residential neighborhoods on the west side of the Town without getting stuck in the traffic gridlock that exists on Miami Lakes Drive, Collins said.
Collins also said she would like the Town’s police commander Captain Bocanegra, a captain with the Miami-Dade Police Department, to answer to Police Director, Robert Parker and to Town Manager Alex Rey, instead of having to go through the department’s chain of command.
"I would consider keeping the Miami-Dade Police contract after it expires if the County allows this concession." Collins said. “Five layers of bureaucracy is too much red tape."
Collins said she has supported a trolley-like bus system so area residents could move around Town more easily. This should be up and running soon. We will even have a special Senior Bus to allow our housebound residents more freedom.
"The buses would move from residential communities to our shopping centers, to our schools and to our businesses." Collins said. “The services will be so efficient, that people may leave their cars at home, go to restaurants, have a haircut, go to a movie, and go to work or school without worrying about traffic and parking.”
Collins is also planning to push for more parks to meet the growing needs of area residents. Especially “Maddens Hammock”, a sixty acre passive park.
"We now have a parks director hired, and I would like an Adopt-A-Park program put in place immediately, and contracts let out to provide uniform parks and green spaces built and maintained,” said Collins. “All of our parks should be as active as the Miami Lakes Park, where the Optimist Club hosts its sports programs." This vision is almost a reality, thanks to our very efficient staff.
Collins added: "Finally, I would like to thank so many wonderful people who have been patient and supportive as we limped along, creating a government that they could live with one step at a time." I would also offer a special and heartfelt "Thank You" to Our Citizen Advisory Boards and Committees, who have worked tirelessly to help us to create a community with a personality. Our System is now being copied by many other communities all over the State.
