Town Receives 2018 Street Tree Matching Grant
ABOUT MILLION TREES MIAMI AND NEAT STREETS MIAMI
Housed in the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, Neat Streets Miami is a multi-jurisdictional county board dedicated to the maintenance and beautification of transportation corridors, gateways and connections. Launched by Neat Streets Miami, the Million Trees Miami Campaign is a community-wide effort to plant one million trees by 2020 to achieve a 30 percent tree canopy cover for Miami-Dade County.
IMPACT OF THE PROJECT
As part of the Town’s Strategic Plan and Beautification Master Plan, the Town Council prioritized the Reforestation of the West Lakes community to create a consistent street tree canopy and improve the aesthetics of this area. The Town successfully completed the West Lake Reforestation Project Phase I in partnership with Neat Streets Miami’s Street Tree Matching Grant Program. Phase I accomplishments included the planting of 37 trees from a variety of Florida-friendly species. This year’s grant will assist the Town to complete Phase II, planting an estimated 53 trees, thereby incorporating a tree planting and removal program to add a uniform canopy to an area that is in great need of canopy trees.
The West Lake Reforestation Project Phase II is consistent with the Town’s Tree Management Plan and will adhere to the Town’s applicable planting standards, Miami-Dade County Landscape Code and diversity standard, and Florida Power Light’s “Plant the Right Tree in the Right Place” guide. Benefits of the project include an improved rhythm of tree canopy and shade, neighborhood walkability, air quality, reduced stormwater runoff, sustained property values, and potential energy savings to adjacent homes.
