Town Receives Grant to Complete Smart Mobility and Future Technology Transportation Study
WHAT IS THE MIAMI LAKES SMART MOBILITY & FUTURE TECHNOLOGY TRANSPORTATION STUDY?
The purpose of the study is to assist the Town to identify, plan, and establish a future network of diverse transportation technologies to build an infrastructure that is capable of supporting the community’s needs, as well as, improving safety and mobility for all users.
The Miami Lakes Smart Mobility and Future Technology Transportation Study will incorporate the evaluation of existing and future technologies that could impact and transform transportation in Miami Lakes, including the integration of diverse future technologies to support connected and autonomous transportation, traffic control and management, adaptive signalization, traveler data, pedestrian and bicycle safety, smart parking, energy efficient transportation technologies, and potential funding mechanisms to sustain a cost-effective future transportation network Town-wide.
In addition, the Study supports two Goals identified in the Town’s Strategic Plan: (1) Achieve universal environmental sustainability in public and private environments, operations and infrastructure; and (2) Achieve national recognition as a “Model Town” for creativity, education, innovation and use of technology.
BENEFITS OF THE STUDY
Proposed benefits of the Study include, but are not limited to the following:
• Increased efficient use of the existing roadway network; reduced traffic congestion; decreased emissions; reduced number of stops along corridors; and increased traffic flow that connects to residential and commercial properties, government public services, schools, parks, shops, restaurants, entertainment, and places of worship Town-wide.
• Improved mobility, transportation, safety, economic growth, and smart transit for the community.
• Expanded reach in creating opportunities for an Internet of Things (IoT) Town-wide network which embraces the integration of future transportation, resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy, safety, and economic benefit.
On May 2, 2017, the Town Council passed Resolution 17-1441 which adopted the development of the Town’s Smart Cities Strategic Road Map and authorized the Town Manager Alex Rey to pursue funding for the road map and its priorities identified in the strategic plan. The grant funded Study supports the priority of the Town’s Strategic Plan to Enhance Mobility for Vehicular and Non-Vehicular Transportation.
