Throwing Kindness Like Confetti: Celebrating and Empowering Girls through Art and Literature
Throwing Kindness Like Confetti will transform many of the girls’ bathrooms at Bob Graham Education Center (see attached photos for examples). The project is two-fold. First, we will use acrylic paints to adorn the bathroom walls with inspirational messages and affirmations. These words will remind girls of their worth and of the power of their words. Artistic colleagues, students and parents will create preliminary designs on paper. We will then work together to paint the bathroom walls. This is a great way to involve the community. Next, we will purchase books that celebrate women and their abilities. These books will be catalogued in the media center and will be available for checkout by all grade levels. All students will be given the opportunity to read books with female characters that are unique and heroic-characters who are not confined by societal norms. They will allow girls to see themselves in those varied roles.

Voices Across Florida
Our Bobcat Singers (Grades 3-5) and Glee Club (Grades 6-8) give live concerts for the enjoyment of our school and community populations. This year, our goal is to bring their voices to the STARS Program for talented youth as performers at Islands of Adventure Theme Park in Orlando, Florida. The grant would assist in defraying the costs related to the trip and production (both pre and post) expenses encumbered by the performance in Orlando and other additional performances in our community at large.

FIU Ropes Course
TRAC is an experiential education program located on FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus. This "hands on" program focuses on human development and group dynamics. The program fosters enrichment through group and individual initiatives. Participants will learn new skills through a series of adventure-based activities that provide training in leadership, teambuilding development, communication and problem solving skills.
Our HML National Honor Society engages in this event on an annual basis to foster problem-solving skills and team building amongst our members. This enables us to then use these skills in community events where we provide assistance throughout the year, as well as within our school and our classrooms.
The cost per person is $38.00, and we estimate 40 participants. We are requesting the mini-grant as a means of subsidizing the cost for our members, so that a reduced cost will enable more students to participate. In addition to the per person costs, we will also incur a bus fee and we plan to provide lunch for participants as well.
This project benefits the communities of Hialeah and Miami Lakes by making the Trojan NHS a more cohesive, productive team and each member a more skillful problem solver as we participate in a myriad of community events. These include but are not limited to Town of Miami Lakes Youth functions such as the Haunted House and Movies in the Park and City of Hialeah events such as the Turkey Trot and the Toy Drive.
