Miami Lakes Awarded Neat Streets Grant
4th Year in a Row
Miami Lakes, FL – Neat Streets Miami awarded the Town of Miami Lakes a $41,600 matching grant for the “Miami Lakes West Lake Reforestation Phase 4 Project” as part of the 2020 Neat Streets Miami’s Street Tree Matching Grant Program. Winning this grant will mean an estimated 130 new trees in Miami Lakes, improving our canopy and quality of life.
Neat Streets Miami is a multi-jurisdictional county board dedicated to the maintenance and beautification of transportation corridors, gateways and connections. In an attempt to reach the Million Trees Miami goal of planting one million trees to achieve a 30 percent tree canopy for Miami-Dade County, Neat Streets Miami created the Street Tree Matching Grant. Funded by Miami-Dade County, this grant engages municipalities, agencies, non-profits, foundations, and community groups in planting native or Florida-friendly trees on streets, including corridors, gateways, bus stops, and connections to schools and parks.
In the past four years, the Town successfully completed the West Lake Reforestation Phase 1, 2, and 3 projects in partnership with the Neat Streets Miami’s Street Tree Matching Grant Program. The next phase in this project is to plant trees that adhere to the Town’s applicable planting standards, Miami-Dade County Landscape Code and diversity standard, Florida No. 1 or better standard, and FPL’s Plant the Right Tree in the Right Place Guide. Previous phases included removing trees that were invasive and planting new native trees in order to create a more cohesive, sustainable tree canopy over West Miami Lakes. The Project will enhance tree canopy, provide shade, create memorable landscape aesthetics, and assist the Town to meet its Strategic Plan and Beautification Master Plan Goals to “Enhance Signature Beauty” by preserving and enriching the Town’s landscapes and tree canopy.
The Neat Streets Miami’s Street Tree Matching Grant will help continue Miami Lakes’ legacy as a Tree City USA – Sterling Community. Sterling communities are regarded as leaders in community forestry and are often looked upon as innovators. This project continues to positively impact and enhance Miami Lakes as a leader in community forestry and benefits residents, students, employees, and visitors in Miami Lakes.
