September Is Suicide Awareness Month in Miami Lakes
Miami Lakes, F.L. – At the September 12 Regular Council Meeting, the Town of Miami Lakes officially declared September as Suicide Awareness Month, reaffirming its commitment to raising awareness about this critical health issue and encouraging community members to foster a health mental health environment.
Suicide is a significant public health concern, the second-leading cause of death among youth and young adults between 10 and 24 years of age. Miami Lakes is taking a proactive stance by designating September as Suicide Awareness Month to promote education, prevention, and support for those affected by suicide. Hear some facts about suicide here:
- Over 48,000 people died by suicide, or about 1 every 11 minutes, in 2021.
- Many adults think about suicide: 12.3 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.5 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.7 million attempted suicide in 2021.
- Suicide affects people of all ages: In 2021, suicide was among the top 9 leading causes of death for people ages 10-64. Suicide was the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-14 and 20-34.
