Those who are not able to attend the meetings can either email their video from their phone to the Town Clerk or upload a video to YouTube on the item they wish to speak about for the Town Mayor and Councilmembers to hear during the Public Comment portion of the Town Council meeting. This new option is another tool the Town of Miami Lakes is using to extend citizen engagement and outreach. Offering remote public participation is beneficial for those individuals who do not have the time, transportation or inclination to attend a regular Town Council meeting.
"This is the first step in achieving our long-term goal of live real-time remote public comments," said Vice Mayor Manny Cid. "The Miami Lakes Town Council is once again leading Miami-Dade County in government accessibility. Initiatives like these will fundamentally transform municipal governance. It is all about Transparency and Accessibility."
The public comment videos are limited to 3 minutes, the same time allotted for speakers at the meetings.
The Town of Miami Lakes wants to make remote public comment easy and is offering a variety of ways to upload videos. Participants can email their video directly to email@example.com from their phone. If the file exceeds 10 MB it will be too large to email, so participants can upload their video to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/upload) and then send the link to the Town Clerk. Additionally, interested persons can utilize a cloud service such as DropBox to share their video.
Participants need to register with the Town Clerk by completing and submitting the registration form, which must be received by the Town of Miami Lakes during the designated timeframe (Wednesday before the meeting date through Monday before the meeting date). The Town Council meets the second Tuesday of the month, except in August.
