Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department Conducting Annual Chlorine Conversion October 13–26
Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department Conducting Annual Chlorine Conversion October 13–26
October 10, 2025
In coordination with the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER), WASD will temporarily modify the method used to disinfect the County’s drinking water supply during this two-week period.
During the conversion, the department will use free chlorine—an effective disinfectant—instead of its standard combined chlorine (chloramine) process. The temporary switch helps maintain the water distribution system and ensure continued water safety and reliability.
While the water remains safe to drink and use, some customers may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor during this time. This condition is temporary and poses no health risk. However, dialysis patients should consult their physicians, and aquarium owners, restaurants, and pet stores with fish-holding tanks are advised to seek guidance from aquarium maintenance professionals.
Throughout the conversion, WASD crews will flush water lines across the county to ensure the entire system is included. Residents may experience occasional, brief periods of lower-than-normal water pressure or cloudy water. If water appears cloudy, residents are encouraged to run the tap for three to five minutes until it clears. This is a cosmetic issue and does not affect water quality.
For questions regarding water quality customers may call 786-552-4738.
WASD continues to proactively inform and engage the community about this annual process through outreach, traditional media, and social media updates. The department thanks residents and partners for their continued cooperation and understanding.
