Town of Miami Lakes Re-Establishes Youth Advisory Board to Elevate Youth Voices in Local Government

Miami Lakes, FL – The Town of Miami Lakes is pleased to announce the re-establishment of its Youth Advisory Board, creating a meaningful opportunity for local students to become more engaged in municipal government and provide their perspectives on issues affecting young people in the community.

The Youth Advisory Board will serve as an advisory body to the Town Council, helping ensure that the experiences, opinions and priorities of Miami Lakes youth are considered as part of the Town’s decision-making process.

The Board will consist of seven members, each serving a one-year term.

Eligible applicants must:

• Be a Miami Lakes resident or attend one of the eligible area schools;
• Maintain an unweighted GPA of at least 2.5;
• Submit a completed Youth Advisory Board application to the Town; and
• Obtain the signature of a parent or legal guardian on the application.

Eligible schools include Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Bob Graham Education Center, Miami Lakes Middle School, Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School, Miami Lakes Educational Center, Barbara Goleman Senior High School and Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School.

While applicants are not required to live within the Town, preference will be given to Miami Lakes residents.

Members of the Youth Advisory Board will have the opportunity to advise the Town Council on significant matters affecting young people, communicate youth perspectives on issues before the Council, and help incorporate the viewpoints of young residents into legislative and policy discussions.

The Board will meet monthly and will operate in accordance with the Town’s established Committee Rules, Regulations and Procedures.

Application and Appointment Timeline

The Town plans to open the application period mid-September and provide students with approximately six weeks to submit their applications. Following the application period, Town Councilmembers will have time to review applicants before appointments are made at the November 2026 Regular Council Meeting. The newly appointed Youth Advisory Board is expected to hold its first meeting in January 2027, allowing the Board to begin its work with the start of the new calendar year.
