Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department Announces Annual Chlorine Conversion

Miami Lakes, FL – The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) will conduct its annual chlorine conversion from September 28 through October 11, 2026.

During this two-week period, WASD will temporarily use free chlorine instead of its usual combined chlorine treatment at its water treatment plants. The annual process, conducted since 1983, helps cleanse the water distribution system and is coordinated with the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County and Miami-Dade County’s Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources.

Residents may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor in their tap water during the conversion period. According to WASD, the water remains fully chlorinated, disinfected and safe to consume.

WASD crews may also flush fire hydrants during the conversion to ensure free chlorine reaches all areas of the distribution system. Residents may experience occasional periods of slightly lower water pressure or temporary water discoloration caused by sediment being disturbed in the pipes.

Customers who use dialysis machines, owners of tropical fish, and businesses with fish-holding tanks are encouraged to seek professional guidance regarding the removal of chlorine residuals from the water during this period.
