April 15, 2024

Miami Lakes, FL – The Growing Roots for Environmentally Equitable Neighborhoods (GREEN) Miami-Dade County Matching Grant Program has awarded the Town a grant in the amount of $50,363 for the Miami Lakes West Lakes Reforestation Phase 6 Project, allowing the Town to continue its mission in enhancing its tree canopy, providing shade, and creating memorable landscapes and beautification through planting trees in the West Lakes area.

“The Town is delighted to collaborate with Miami-Dade County to continue to enhance our tree canopy,” says Grants & Governmental Affairs Manager for the Town Renée Wilson on the project. “We have been successful in securing this grant for six cycles, amounting to over $200,000 for the Town.”

This project, said Town Arbor Coordinator Andres Pineiro, adds to the larger picture of the community and its approach to greenspace. Urban reforestation is described as “a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Miami Lakes community and the Town of Miami Lakes to the beautification of our town,” he said. “We extend our gratitude to every resident whose support has brought these projects to fruition.”

The Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting an Arbor Day event on April 26 at 10:30 a.m., celebrating the planting of two new southern live oak trees at P87 (8767 NW 139th Street), also part of the West Lakes Reforestation Project.

Funding for this grant was provided by the Growing Roots for Environmentally Equitable Neighborhoods (GREEN) Miami-Dade County Matching Grant Program, which engages municipalities, agencies, non-profits foundations, and community groups to plant native or Florida-friendly trees on public land, including streets, transit sites, bus stops, schools, libraries, parks, playgrounds, public housing, etc. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this announcement do not necessarily represent those of Miami-Dade County.
