TeamJag Robotics at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) won a $1,000 grant to upgrade its current competitive hardware to VEX V5 Hardware. TeamJag currently has 48 club members and is moderated by Paul Kynerd, engineering teacher and club sponsor. Working on VEX teaches MLEC students to build and code, giving them an advantage in STEM-related careers in the future. TeamJag’s attendance at VEX competitions helps MLEC continue to be a “Gold-Designated” STEM school and best magnet school in the nation according to Magnet Schools of America.

The Miami Lakes K-8 Center earned a grant of $1,000 to immerse the pre-kindergarten classes in the newest academic trend, STEAM. Miami Lakes K-8 Center is committed to growing “Our Garden of Kindness” that will be both a playground and educational center. Pre-K students will learn about gardening. To incorporate engineering, a set of building blocks will be available in the playground. I-pad technology will be used to keep track of the garden’s growth and for documentation. “Play with OSMO” will also be used on the I-pad and freehand drawings will be encouraged to promote self-expression, sharing, and art enrichment.

Open Mind, Open Arms: A Mental Health Awareness Organization obtained a $500 grant by the Miami Lakes Town Foundation to benefit students at Barbara Goleman High School. A symposium was held by the club in November and provided resources about mental health to parents and students. As part of the “Head On: Tackling the Stigma” project, monthly campaigns aimed at spreading positivity and awareness will be held at Barbara Goleman. The project will culminate with a week-long campaign in May, Mental Health Awareness Month, where banners, balloons, and daily giveaways will occur to engage every student with ending the stigma around mental health issues.
