February is Heart Health Month
Miami Lakes, FL – The Town of Miami Lakes would like to raise awareness of heart disease and how our residents can prevent it—at home and in the community this February by encouraging officials and residents to wear red on Friday, February 5, 2021.
The first Friday in February is “National Wear Red Day®.” The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute observes National Wear Red Day each year to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death among Americans, especially women.
Heart disease is largely preventable. Here are some things that you can start doing to reduce your risk of heart disease:
-Live smoke-free. For resources on quitting smoking, visit www.smokefree.gov
-Eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
-Aim to exercise for thirty minutes every day.
-Choose to go on a brisk walk or a bike ride when possible.
-Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose.
-Know your family history of heart disease. There may be genetic factors that increase your risk of heart disease and strokes.
